I love winter - I love crisp frosty mornings followed by a sunny, blue Canterbury sky - BUT, having just sweltered my way through parts of Europe (not complaining) – it’s a bit of a shock getting back to the dark and the cold.
Which makes this is the perfect time to remember how to keep the winter season filled with positivity and joy using these tips for wellness from within.
Nurturing Your soul through creativity
I don't consider myself to be naturally creative, but do I find that engaging in creative activities gives me an emotional outlet and reduces stress while also lifting my spirits. Jigsaw puzzles and writing are my go too - what's yours? Maybe try picking up a paintbrush, starting a journal, exploring the art of crafting or playing an instrument. These activities can not only help you express yourself but also bring a sense of fulfilment and joy - making winter a perfect time for self-discovery through creativity.
prioritizing self care and hygge
I love the Danish concept of hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) - which is primarily about cosy comfort - about surrounding yourself with the things that make life good, like friendship, and laughter, as well as more concrete things like warmth, light, seasonal food, and drinks. So treat yourself to warm baths with essential oils, sip on herbal teas, light some candles and snuggle up with a good book under soft blankets, whatever helps create a soothing and nurturing atmosphere for you in your home.
"Happiness consists more in small conveniences or pleasures that occur every day, than in great pieces of good fortune that happen but seldom." The Little Book of Hygge
Embracing Gratitude and mindfulness
Focusing on mindfulness and gratitude can work wonders for your mental well-being and help you navigate the winter months with a peaceful mind. Personally I like to start each day with a guided meditation and some grounding followed by "Havening for Happiness" (See previous post). Deep breathing is also great along with creating a gratitude journal and jotting down things you're thankful for. These simple practices will shift your focus from negativity to positivity and the more you do it, the longer and stronger the impact will be.
connect, share, laugh
Laughter truly is the best medicine - and while I enjoy a good laugh at myself, it is always better to share jokes, funny stories or watch your favourite "friends" episode with others. During winter, maintaining social connections is vital for your well-being - and so is kindness and compassion. There are so many ways you can engage in acts of kindness, whether it's helping a neighbour, volunteering at a local shelter, or reaching out to someone who might be feeling lonely. Giving back to your community fosters a sense of fulfilment and deepens your connection with others - lifting your spirits and giving purpose and meaning.
warming up with invigorating exercise
Even when it's too chilly to venture outside, you can still enjoy invigorating workouts within the comfort of your home. There are lots of online workout videos, yoga routines, pilates practices that you can get into - or simply dance to your favourite tunes (REALLY loud and only when I'm alone!). Physical activity releases endorphins, the feel-good hormones, promoting a positive mood and boosting your energy levels even on the darkest winter days.
Taking care of the little things
Remember, it's the little things that make a big difference in maintaining a positive mindset and vibrant spirit during colder months. So, nurture your mind, energize your body, and kindle your spirit, and let this winter be your time to shine!
Stay warm, stay well, and make this winter your best one yet!
Cheers
